Maui Jinsha Shrine-1915
The painting of the "One Thousand Horses" by the artist Seppo Sawada, an issei who lived in Wailuku, was completed in 1916.
Each contributer of a dollar to the building construction fund had their name painted on one of the horses' saddles.
The Rev. Arine explained in an interview that horses were selected because: "the horse is a good luck symbol for the Shinto religion."
