Tree to 25 m high, much planted in tropical countries near sea-shores for ornament and shade; wide-spreading branches arranged in tiers with large obovate, leathery leaves to 30 cm long, becoming red before they fall twice a year; flowers greenish-white in spikes, followed on female flowers by greenish or reddish 2-angled fruit 3-5 cm long, with oil-bearing seed, which can be eaten raw or roasted.
